Digital event on 20 June, 14:00 - 15:30
On the occasion of World Refugee Day, we would like to draw your attention to the results of the annual online survey of 700 professionals in Germany on the situation of young refugees in Germany.
The results of the current survey (2024) illustrate an increasing aggravation of the situation of young refugees. Experiences of violence and racism are on the rise, as is exclusion from regular school lessons. Compared to the previous year, there has been a significant decline in protection, education and participation. Asylum and care systems are becoming increasingly restrictive. This creates a spiral of pressure that increasingly affects the resilience and psychological stability of young people and their carers.
Political measures such as the GEAS reform, refoulement at internal borders and the suspension of family reunification for beneficiaries of subsidiary protection illustrate a policy of isolation and deterrence. These developments have a deep impact on the practice of youth welfare. Procedures are becoming more restrictive, assistance is being cut or denied, and the best interests of the child - for example in the case of family reunification - are often no longer perceived as a guiding principle.
At the same time, the survey shows that professionals work alongside young people with a great deal of strength and commitment to oppose disenfranchisement. They also share their practical experiences of what they believe enables participation and empowers young people.
