The procedure for the appointment or reappointment of a professorship is initiated by the respective faculty. Following the decision of the Presidential Board, the professorship is advertised publicly.

Paderborn University explicitly addresses qualified candidates in Germany and abroad with its advertisements and pursues the goal of further increasing internationalisation and the proportion of female professors.

Selection and work of the Professorial Appointment Committee
The Professorial Appointment Committee is made up of junior professors and professors, academic staff and students. The Equal Opportunities Officer and the representative body for severely disabled persons are involved in all stages of the procedure.

The Professorial Appointment Committee selects applicants for the shortlist based on a set catalogue of criteria and invites them to interview events.

The interview events usually include

  • a public lecture at the university,
  • a teaching sample, if applicable,
  • a discussion on the research and teaching concept,
  • a non-public discussion with the Professorial Appointment Committee (e.g. on equipment issues).

The aim is to assess both the professional qualifications and the teaching skills of the applicants.

Review and appointment proposal
At least two external expert opinions are obtained for shortlisted applicants.

On this basis, the Professorial Appointment Committee draws up an appointment proposal, which usually contains three names. The order must be justified in detail and is documented in a final report together with the course of the procedure.

Decision-making in the committees
The Faculty Council first decides on the appointment proposal. The proposal is then submitted to the Executive Board via the President.

After discussion in the Presidential Board, the proposal is submitted to the Senate for approval.

Appointment
After approval by the Senate, the appointment is made by the President of Paderborn University to the first-placed person.
