Secondary activities
Employment at Paderborn University is considered to be the main occupation. A secondary employment is any activity that is carried out outside the employment relationship in return for remuneration. This includes any consideration in cash or non-cash benefits. Secondary employment may not be pursued without prior notification or authorisation.
A secondary activity is the performance of a secondary office or secondary employment.
Asecondary office is a group of tasks that is not part of a main office and is performed on the basis of a public-law employment or official relationship. The main office is the specific area of responsibility assigned to the employee. This results, for example, from defined job descriptions of a position or from appointment agreements. An activity from the main office cannot be a secondary employment.
Secondary employment is any secondary activity within or outside the public service that is not part of a main or secondary office. This is a private activity.
The performance of an honorary public office or unpaid guardianship, care, curatorship or execution of a will is not considered a secondary occupation, but its acceptance must be reported in writing before commencement.
Please note:
Applications for approval of secondary employment or notification of secondary employment that does not require approval/generally approved secondary employment must be submitted through official channels, i.e. via the supervisor and the Dean, in good time before commencing the activity. All applications / notifications must be accompanied by copies of contracts or similar (e.g. consultant or employee contract) containing information on the type, total duration and scope of the secondary employment.
Authorisations must be granted for each individual secondary activity and are limited to a maximum of five years. Subsequent changes must be reported immediately.
The duration of one or more secondary employment(s) may not exceed one fifth of the regular weekly working hours for full-time employees (on average 8 hours per week for full-time employees). Other regulations apply during parental leave.
