Semester, intensive and other courses are offered. The semester courses take place during the lecture period, the four-week intensive courses take place during the lecture-free period. In addition, there are other courses with a specific focus, e.g. speaking or creative writing, which are offered both during and outside the lecture period and often take place in blocks.
To see which courses are on offer, please click on the tile with the desired level at the top. In the next step, indicate whether you would like to take an intensive, semester or other course.

If you already have some knowledge of German but have not yet completed a German course at Paderborn University, you must take a placement test before enrolling.

Please note the deadlines.
Note: If you have no knowledge of German, you do not need a placement test and can register directly for level A1.1.

Please check whether you have been successfully re-registered for the semester associated with the course (click on "My files" > "Personal data" > Semester status"). Enrolment is only possible after successful re-registration.
It is possible that the desired course is already fully booked. Please choose another course, if available. If you need to register for the course in order to complete your studies within the standard period of study, please send an e-mail to deutschkurse@upb.de. Please state in the e-mail
- which degree programme you are enrolled in, and
- what your matriculation number is.
In justified cases of hardship, we will check as quickly as possible whether late enrolment is possible. To ensure that your request can be processed promptly, please always contact our central e-mail address deutschkurse@upb.de and refrain from sending duplicate requests to several people.
If the desired course is already fully booked, you have the opportunity to register for remaining places in PAUL during the revision phase. The revision phase begins
- for intensive courses on the Friday before the course starts, at 8:00 a.m. and
- for semester courses on the Friday 1.5 weeks before the start of the course, at 8.00 am.
As soon as a place is available in your desired course, you can register for it in PAUL. Places can always become available during the entire revision phase. You should therefore check PAUL regularly until the end of the revision period. The exact end of the revision phase is indicated in PAUL.
Please note that the revision process cannot guarantee you a place, but only the opportunity to register independently if a place becomes available at short notice.
If you are unable to find a place on the semester course during the revision phase, the next intensive courses or our "other courses" for different levels may be a suitable alternative. You can find the start for enrolment in PAUL here: /en/zfs/language-courses-for-students/german/german-courses

It is only possible to change courses in the semester courses until the end of the first week of the course and in the intensive courses only until Wednesday of the first week of the course. If you have the impression that the level of the course is not right for you, please discuss the course change with your course instructor directly after the first session. They will then check whether it is possible to change to the desired level.
If you require a participation certificate, please contact our central e-mail address deutschkurse@upb.de, stating the following details:
- Your matriculation number
- the semester in which the course was taken
- the level you have completed
Please note that for reasons of data protection, we may only store your data and your certificate of achievement for a limited period of time (maximum 5 years). After this time, it is no longer possible to issue a duplicate of this certificate of achievement.
