Deep reading. Working with scientific literature for writing (in English)
Not all reading is the same. Even when reading academic texts as part of your own research practice, the goals may vary: gaining an overview of your field of research, becoming thoroughly familiar with the foundational texts in your field, strengthening your arguments, or distinguishing your work from that of other authors. These and other goals require different reading strategies. What they all have in common is that a quick scan of the research literature is, at best, merely the first step toward a phase of deeper and more focused engagement with the respective literature. To ensure that this in-depth reading remains effective and meaningful, various reading strategies and methods are helpful. In the workshop, we will discuss such strategies, apply them in practice, and address questions such as:
- At what time of day (or night), in which room, etc. do you read most effectively?
- On average, how long does it take you to read a page of a scientific text? Are there differences and similarities between the way you read your own scientific texts (e.g., when revising or correcting) and the way you read other people¡¯s scientific texts as research literature for your own writing projects?
- Where do you start reading: References, abstract, table of contents, introduction, headings, discussion, ...?
- How do you record your thoughts while reading? How do you extract information from scientific texts to include in your own writing?
- What systems for organizing literature and readings do you use?
- How are scientific writing and scientific reading intertwined for you? Is there a ¡°rhythm¡±? Is it always the same?
